Summer Jam 2007

Another British summer over (before it began) and another Jam held! WakeMKs third years offering was, as suspected, another laid back fun filled event, helping to showcase cable Wakeboarding and giving everyone a damn good ride at the same time!

For those not familiar with the "Jam" format, riders are divided up into their appropriate groups, pro amateur, ladies etc and then let loose on the park for an hour or so. To qualify riders must get themselves on the water and in the judges faces as much as possible, fashion airs and waves do work but mainly the judges are looking for the massive airs and the most technical tricks. Once the pick of the bunch have been decided on, all the rides go through to the usual 2 lap plus wildcard finals.

This year's attendance was strong in all categories, with over 80 riders in total. Returning for their third Jam the sound crew JMC got the tunes going at around 12:00 and the riders hit the water for the first of the jam sessions. We didn't have to wait too long for some heavy riding, the standard of the under 16's was of the hook!

The boys and girls had been mixed together to save on time and to encourage that friendly vibe. I caught sight of some big S Bends, S to Blinds, some spot on rail riding, front side and backside slides, people's individual styles showing through and giving the next set of riders on the dock some early inspiration.

Next up the ladies hit the cable, riders from all over the county had made the trek and it was great to be able to shout out so many names from so many clubs. The standard from the girls was also much higher than in previous years and most of the field where pulling inverts off the water and spins of the kickers. Some good crashes where also had and the crowd where really getting into the atmosphere, plenty of riders had their family and friends supporting them through the day offering shout outs and cheers.

The amateur men were the next to step up, a big field this year with 26 entries. Again the standard was high and there were plenty of big hitters grabbing some early points from the judges while enjoying riding along side all the other hopefuls. Some big Blind Judges and S Bends got noted plus plenty of the stock tricks, Back roll, Roll To Revert and Raley combo's. As the group was so big plenty of time had been given for the qualification and every rider got a good turn at destroying the cable as best they could. Just before the afternoons main event, the pro jam session, the Grinch winch was cranked up and offered a little side line entertainment, riders hitting a gap on flat bar which had been plonked in the water the same morning!

After a short break for the long suffering judges they took their seats for the pro jam a mix of the county's best cable talent, riders from nearly every cable park had come to play and boy did they. It was non stop action, a fun packed 75 minuets of just about every conservable trick in the book. The MK park got a full on seeing too, every ramp and rail was abused, a few riders taking big stacks, Earnshaw and Jonty both being claimed by the Protest M rail after attempting to transfer from box to rail.

The crowd on the bank stood on their feet most of the time cheering massive double S bends, a sweet corner cut Double S from Gary Stelfox along with all the fantasticle unnameable combinations being thrown by Nick Davies. Damien Bull reduced his chances of qualifying after pinking a handle through the cables drive tower stopping play for 5 minutes while it was fixed. Back on the water and grabbing the attention of the judges James Young, Lewis Cornwall and Will Manns where all throwing down highly technical tricks using plenty of edges, some sweet switch toe side stuff, big switch mobe 5's and Crowmobes. Tom Watson was also being picked out selling some huge Hinterburger 5's right in front of the judges and defiantly coming back into form! There was just so much going on its hard to really pick between them.

As the hour started to run down and the crowd ran out of breath a few riders doubled up and put on a bit of a show for the final 15 minutes, showing that it really is about having fun!

After all the high flying action the skaters took to the lake and slowed things down, 6 riders had half an hour to put them self's into the top 3, plenty of kick flips, surface spins, needless crashing and scary ball grabbing rail crashes later and the winners had been decided.

The finals came next, the usual competition two lap rules were implemented and this gave every qualifying rider the chance to ride the cable to themselves, cram in their best trick combinations and add that little bit of personal style which is all so important. The water had flattened off nicely and after 5 hours of action the crowd on the bank still had plenty of energy. It was a class final with some top riding.

It wasn't long before the last rider had finished his run and the light stated to fade, the DJ's turned down the tunes (a bit) and it was time to hand out the amazing amount of prizes kindly donated by the sponsors and WakeMK.

WakeMK would like to say thanks to everyone who rode watched and supported, see you next summer.

MK riders hit the podium.

Having wet there whistle at the Ten feet high competition in May a huge group of MK riders trekked down to Princes for the 2007 cable nationals. Following a slightly different format from previous years, riders had just two laps to impress the judges, with the better of the two runs counting towards their score. John Earnshaw proved himself yet again and retained his 2006 master's title for another year!
A massive well done to everyone who entered especially those making the all important podium. Here they are:
John Earnshaw 1st place masters men.
Emily Bebbington 1st place open women.
Alexis Twigden 2nd place open women.
Declan Clifford 3rd place boys.
Charlotte Hemming 3rd place junior women.

The team will be meeting the first three Fridays in every month and have their first comp on the 19th May in Sheffield.
We will be letting you know how they get on throughout the year.

One 4 Six opens
